Book Condition Grading Guide
Mint: A brand new book – unread
Near Mint (NM) Score 10/10: The book is in the same immaculate condition as when it was published and is almost indistinguishable from a brand new book. This could be the description for a book that has been lost in a warehouse for years, never shelved, thumbed or even opened yet may still be some years old.
Fine (F or FN) Score 9/10: A Fine book approaches the condition of Near Mint, but without being crisp. The book appears to be in excellent condition but will show evidence of previous ownership and storage. There may be a small inscription to or by the previous owner inside, but generally it is near perfect condition. There may be slight rubbing to corners and edges.
Near Fine (F- or FN-) Score 8/10: A Near Fine book is very similar to Fine but the inscription or dedication inside may be larger, slightly more shelf wear to the edges, corners and/or covers. There may be other minor imperfections and marks that are not immediately obvious. Any other imperfections will be described.
Very Good (VG) Score 7/10: Describes a book that shows more small signs of wear to the binding, dust jacket, boards and/or paper. Not as good as Near Fine, more obvious signs of wear but still very good condition. It may have one or two (but not all) more obvious issues such as, Dust Jackets with more obvious scuffing and perhaps a small tear or two (usually no bigger than 1cm) or some slight sun fading. There may be some light foxing to pages or yellowing to edges, and a dedication or name written inside. The dust jacket may be price clipped.
Good (G) Score 6/10: Describes the average used worn book that has all pages or leaves present. It will not be in as good condition as Very Good and may have several of the above defects present. It may have more markings written inside or other light pen markings on pages. Dust jackets may be price clipped and have more significant wear. It will be an obvious second-hand book but still a perfectly reasonable copy.
Fair (F) Score 5/10: A Worn book that has complete text pages but may lack endpapers or title pages. The binding and dust jacket may also be more significantly worn and torn in places.
Poor (P) Score 4/10 or below: Describes a book that is very worn with one or more missing pages. This copy may be soiled, scuffed, stained or spotted and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc. It is suitable only for reading.
We do not sell books below this grading unless they are particularly scarce or collectable.
Vinyl Records Condition Grading Guide
All our records are graded according to the Record Collector Grading system as outlined below. Please refer to this when deciding whether to buy from us or not. We have 30 years experience buying and selling records and pride ourselves on grading as accurately as possible.
Unless otherwise stated, all our records are graded visually only. We simply don't have the time or resource to listen to everything that we sell. We offer a no quibble return policy if the record you receive is not as we described it. We tend to err on the side of caution when grading so often you may receive a record in better condition than the grading suggests. Please also inspect the pictures for condition as they will be of the actual item you will receive. We don't use stock images.
We grade the record itself and the cover/sleeve separately, vinyl first then the cover. For example: NM/EX
We want to ensure your record reaches you in tip top shape, so we only ship in professional record mailers as standard.
